As students move into the upper grades of elementary school, they are required to meet higher expectations both in and out of the classroom. Children in this age band will analyze complex content and express their learning in many ways using a variety of tools. By the end of 6th grade, students should be grade-level competent in both English Language Arts and math. Socially, they will make friends and understand social rules and consequences.
Guiding Principles for Dual Language Education has been used for over a decade by dual language programs and educators across the United States as an effective tool for planning, self-reflection, and continual improvement. The third edition of this widely-used resource has been updated to reflect new knowledge, practices, and policies in the arena of dual language education.
Educating dual language learners (DLLs) and English learners (ELs) effectively is a national challenge with consequences both for individuals and for American society. Supporting Content Learning in the Secondary Classroom through Literacy: Resources for Science, Mathematics, History/Social Science, ELD, and ELA
The California Department of Education (CDE) developed a series of videos demonstrating integrated ELD instruction and its related designated ELD instruction during ELA, mathematics, and science. The Integrated and Designated ELD Video Series demonstrates the relationship between the California English Language Development Standards (CA ELD Standards) and the state content standards. When used in tandem, English learner students build English proficiency, refine academic use of English, and access subject area content in transitional kindergarten/kindergarten through grade twelve.
