Grades 7-9

Independent learning, personal motivation, and leadership skills continue to develop in this grade band. Students are encouraged to think independently and express their opinions, maximize their potential and maintain positive relationships. Students in this grade band need to pass Algebra I or Integrated Math by the end of 9th grade. They also will have an increasing awareness and acceptance of differences in people.

The California Regional Environmental Education Community (CREEC) Network is a program of the California Department of Education. The CREEC Network fosters regional partnerships throughout the state of California to promote environmental education and environmental literacy by providing teachers with access to high quality professional learning opportunities and education resources. Along with statewide sponsors and partners, each of the 11 California CREEC Regions provides professional learning opportunities and resources to educators as well as foster communications among schools and organizations interested in supporting the environmental literacy of California’s teachers and students. The Spelling Bee is an annual contest held amongst the winners of the thirty-three school districts in San Bernardino County where K-8th grade students are challenged to spell words from a given list, as well as more challenging words that require students to have an in-depth knowledge of word morphology. San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools promotes and encourages students to improve their spelling, expand their vocabularies and learn correct English usage that will positively affect communication, reading, and writing skills for the rest of their lives.

Academic Decathlon promotes educational experience for teams of high school (9th-12th) students to compete in ten academic events and a super quiz centered around a competition theme. Students of all GPA levels can compete. The goals of the Academic Decathlon are to encourage students to develop a greater respect for knowledge, to promote wholesome inter-school competition in academic areas of study and interest, to stimulate intellectual growth and achievement, and to encourage public interest and awareness of outstanding programs in secondary schools.

Mock Trial

Through the collaboration of SBCSS and the office of the San Bernardino County District Attorney, the Mock Trial program provides high school (9th-12th) students with a working knowledge of legal institutions and the judicial system. Students research a case developed by the Constitutional Rights Foundation and prepare for trial as attorneys, witnesses, defendants, bailiffs, and clerks. Local judges, prosecutors, public defenders, and private attorneys volunteer their time to provide guidance in courtroom procedure and trial preparation. These volunteers preside over the trials and score the events.
